Why Choose Cosmetic Surgery? Rhinoplasty, abdominoplasty, lipoplasty… are these terms familiar to you? If you have been watching shows like Nip/Tuck or The Swan, you probably have already seen how these cosmetic surgery procedures are done, and what results they can give. Humans are all fashioned by nature to have different designs, such that people end up looking differently. Some people are born with large noses, and some have pointy chins. There are those who have protruding earlobes, while there are those who have very thin lips. Because of these, there are some people who want to take on nature’s challenge, and transform their bodies and improve their appearance. This is to the point that they risk themselves and their money on these costly treatments. There are many reasons why people would opt to go under the knife, and you may be surprised when you hear about the situations that they are in. Generally, when you consider cosmetic surgery, the main goal is to look better or more beautiful. For a majority of men and women in the United States who spend hundreds to thousands of dollars on such procedures, cosmetic surgery is like the fountain of youth, allowing them to take years off of their appearance. Examples of such procedures are Botox injections, face lifts, brow lifts, and many more. However, aside from the aesthetic benefits that cosmetic surgery procedures bring, there are some cases wherein they are really needed. Take for example patients who were victims of fire or a tragic accident. Disfigurements and skin damage can be repaired through cosmetic surgery. Actually, skin grafts and other skin treatments that are used today first began as procedures for soldiers and victims of war in the early 20th century. Here is another bit of trivia. Did you know that Botox was not initially invented to help remove wrinkles and smoothen fine lines? The bacterial product, Botox, was first used to help treat nervous disorders, such as strabismus, facial tics, and also blinking conditions. Later on, Botox was found to also be effective in skin and muscle smoothening, which is why it is now made available as injections. For people who need to lose weight for health reasons, there are cosmetic treatments that involve removal of excess fat, as well as reshaping the figure. Lipoplasty, commonly known as liposuction, involves the vacuuming of subcutaneous fat, then tightening the skin around it to create a firm appearance. Liposuction is a procedure often paired with abdominoplasty, or the tummy tuck; thighoplasty, or the thigh lift; buttock lifts, and arm lifts. There are people who opt for the non-invasive forms of cosmetic surgery, just for maintenance of their current appearance. Examples of which are microdermabrasion and dermabrasion, which are used to rejuvenate skin and make it more youthful looking. To learn more about the costs and statistics of cosmetic procedures in the USA, you can find excellent resources like the ASPS, or the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
