Obesity Surgery

Obesity is a condition that is increasing greatly all over the world, especially in Western countries.  Obese people may actually be treated with a combination of both exercise and diet.  Nowadays, there are even weight loss pills available e.g. Reductil.  However, for people with severe obesity, most of these treatments do not really work.  This is where obesity surgery comes in.

Being obese makes people look unattractive; it also causes very grave medical conditions such as cancer, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and a lot more.  If you are very much obese and you really want to live until normal life expectancy, it is advisable to undergo obesity surgery.  As compared to other weight loss treatments, obesity surgery may be able to give you more significant results for as long as you live your life as recommended by your physician.

Obesity surgery, however, may only be done on obese people who meet the following conditions:

  1. An obese person has a body mass index of 40 or more
  2. People who have a body mass index between 35-40 combined with grave medical conditions that may be treated by weight reduction
  3. Obese individuals who have been obese for at least 5 years and have tried traditional weight loss treatments e.g. dieting but they did not work
  4. Obese people who have no history of alcohol addiction or mental illnesses
  5. People who are obese and are aged between 18 – 55 years

If you are interested in having obesity surgery done, you must first seek obesity surgery counseling from a certified medical expert on the subject e.g. dieticians, surgeons.  You will first be assessed if you are fit enough to undergo the surgery both physically and mentally.  Once you have undergone obesity surgery, you will still need to be counseled in terms of the diet plans and eating habits you would have to follow.

People interested in undergoing obesity surgery should be very much aware that if the right lifestyle is not lived after the surgery, they will usually begin to gain a lot of weight again.  Obesity surgery can be long term but its effects may not be seen for a lifetime if the patients are not disciplined and determined enough.  The diet plans that would be recommended by your nutritionist will mostly be very strict in order to push for weight loss for long term as well as to help the patients live healthy.

Take note that obesity surgery is said to be more effective than taking diet pills especially in terms of improving on quality living, curing or reducing medical illnesses such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, asthma, etc.  If you want to get the most out of your obesity surgery however, it is a must to follow the physician’s instructions to the letter.  It is recommended that you first gain an overview of what obesity surgery really is, as well as the benefits and risks before making that decision.
